Dear Spine Series…I love you

Good afternoon, Yogis! Yesterday we had a staff meeting to talk about yoga related things and the topic was the Spine Strengthening Series of postures (Cobra, Locust, Full Locust and Bow Pose). So, this morning while I was practicing, I was particularly focussed on listening to the dialogue and relating it to my body and really trying to do the postures correctly (haha, are you now thinking, “what, she doesn’t always do the postures correctly??!!). The information that we discussed yesterday wasn’t new information, but it was a collaboration from everyone of all the different little tidbits we’ve all gained over the years of teaching and learning.

So, there I was, in the postures, finding myself so focussed on the postures themselves that I realised after I was finished that I was actually meditating during these short postures. Which then made me realise that for the most part, during these short but sassy postures, my brain has the tendency to over-think, over-complain and over-indulge in thoughts that are not of service to me at that time. And, as I was focussed so much on the posture, on my body in the postures and working hard in the postures, when I relaxed in Savasana, I did not feel worn out but rather I felt re-energized. Huh, how about that…I worked harder and got more energy.

Ah-mazing! 😉 Thank you, Spine Series, you are forever in my heart.

Companies, like humans, need feedback to grow

Good evening, Puppies. It’s Tuesday and I’ve been putzing around today getting “stuff” done. This is a busy week for me, I’m teaching up island this weekend at BYCampbell River and then drive home Sunday late afternoon (by the way, I heard today it’s supposed to SNOW on Sunday…? uhg) and then I fly out to visit Besty on Monday afternoon. So, needless to say, I have lots to do this week so I’m not scrambling on Monday morning.

 

Aaaaanyhow. I wanted to post about my love affair with Sonicare. I have had a Sonicare toothbrush since Christmas of 2004. My mom had one and couldn’t stop going on about how wonderful it was so bought one for me for Christmas. I immediately fell in love. If you’ve spent any length of time with me you’ll know how ocd I am about oral hygiene. Those of you who have a Sonicare will understand this love at first brush! After a consistant time of brushing with a Sonicare (can you actually *just* call it “brushing”, I wonder?), a manual toothbrush might as well be as good as using my finger. Yes, it’s that good.

 

So, My first one I fried in Hong Kong with the wattage or voltage or something. My second one I did something to in Barcelona-maybe a voltage thing but I was so careful. The third one was totally my fault…I wasn’t careful when travelling and knocked the little attachment spikey thing loose so the connection was lost. This last one I had just conked out. No fault of mine (at least not that I know of), it just suddenly started having problems turning on (and off), and then one day just wouldn’t turn on at all…(as a side note, it did actually turn on just the other day…at 4am…while it was in the bathroom…by itself…weird). So, because I didn’t have this one for very long (just since May of this year), I decided that I was going to take action and get a new one.

 

I need to tell you a side story first. I was in Vancouver last week and visited with my dad and step mom over there. The conversation turned at one point to how my dad used to always return things to the dealer and/or contact the company to get replacement of things….many things…and it always turned out great. I think he paid one time for sneakers and got about 6 pair over the years! So, I think I was reminded by this that this kind of thing is IN MY BLOOD!!

 

Back to my Sonicare. I contacted Phillips (the company that makes Sonicare) and, to make a long story less long, they sent me a new handle FOR FREE and I simply popped the old not working one into the box and sent it back to them…postage paid. Voila, new toothbrush.

 

I wanted to tell you this story because I think so many people have things break on them (or are moldy or old or cracked when they buy them) but don’t ever do anything about it. What I noticed when I got my new toothbrush is that the design is ever so slightly changed…so, the fact that they were so easy to accept that mine was broken, leads me to believe that I am not the only one who has had this problem and they rectified the problem. SO, you see, speak up! Companies, like humans, need feedback to grow. 😉


current obsession –> tahini dressing

I’ve posted a couple on yoga, I thought I’d throw a foodie post out there as well!

My current favourite obsession is tahini dressing…but not any old tahini dressing, my home made tahini dressing!

Here you go, and be warned, I do not have measurements (but, you might be getting used to this from me already!)

Raw Tahini (about 1/3 of a jar…ish…?) (I like the Maranatha brand)

Fresh lemon juice (1-2 lemons depending on how lemony you like it and/or how much other ingredients you are using)

Honey (again, depends on how much you are making)

Water (might be equal to the other ingredients total, depending on the desired consistency)

Salt and pepper as needed. (and any other seasonings you like…garlic, cayenne, etc)

*blend it all together

*start slowly with your ingredients and taste as you go. Once you make this a few times you can throw caution to the wind and dump it all in the blender without much thought and it will be perfect, but it may take a bit of time to get the ratios to your liking 😉

This dressing will keep for quite a while in the fridge. I like to put it on my salad…as well as pretty well anything else I eat (steamed veggies, quinoa, etc).


Bikram Yoga is SUPPOSED to be hard, silly

I’ve had the opportunity over the past little while to take what I would refer to as “soft” classes at various Bikram studios. I am a good student in the sense that I listen to the instructor, I try to move with him or her, but sometimes I can be a naughty cow (yes, it’s true, I can be a brat in the yoga room on occasion…!). Bikram Yoga is designed so simply. As teachers, we are given a very specific set of instructions, a dialogue, which is designed to tell the students exactly WHAT to do, HOW to do, and the EFFECT of doing it that way. *keep in mind, I just referred to it as the dialogue, not the monologue*. In every class there is a mix of experience and ability, age and history, endurance and strength. So, while we teach the *same* class every time, the class is never the same (you know what I’m talking about, don’t you…). If I don’t hear clear instructions, it makes it hard to know what I’m supposed to be doing (even after practicing 11 years, I like to hear the dialogue, that way I don’t have to think about what I’m doing, I just do what I’m told). When I don’t hear the dialogue is when I end up getting anxious because my brain has the time to wander and drift…

The class is HARD. It’s like that by design! Can you believe it?! He designed the class to be hard…and that is why I love it. In my first class I remember thinking “finally, something that I can do that uses my ability (flexibility) and still feels like I’m getting something out of it”! Of course, I loved it and hated it all at the same time in the beginning (who am I kidding, there is still a hint of love/hate…but thankfully the LOVE wins out every time). So, that being said, when a teacher is loosy goosy or hippy dippy it takes away from the design of the class. I get that not everyone wants to work that hard in class (either because he or she wants to take it easy or has to take it easy or hasn’t realised yet that they have more than they even know is available to him or her and hasn’t tapped into his or her true power and potential in the yoga room and in life…alas, I digress). SO, while I can get into a softer class from time to time, the true power in this practice is the daily challenge of it. It has taken me a long time and many classes taught (and much growth personally) to understand that not everyone wants to practice like I do…and, for that matter, I don’t always want to practice like I do!! I get that people need to take it at their own pace and go where they can and push as they are able…however, they need to be given the opportunity to go further rather than encouraged to back off or slow down or “do it if you think you might want to one day consider it…”. I know, I know, I can feel the grrr’s and the wtf’s building in you readers…we all have to be responsible for our own healing and our own bodies (after all, we as teachers can only guide you, but we don’t know how your body feels and where you can go, we can only encourage you to do it), but something brought you to the hot room and you have no idea what is possible until you push yourself a little out of your comfort zone…

Overtime I have come to notice that sometimes people who practice Bikram yoga for a long time get “bored”, feel they have gotten all they can from Bikram yoga, think they have injured themselves through the practice, feel like it’s harming them more than healing… I have seen many people stop practicing, start practicing something else, or get into another form of exercise. While I think that doing other things/yoga is great, I have also seen the flip side of this. I cannot tell you the number of people I have seen have major breakthroughs in their lives-physically, mentally, spiritually-all stemming from their Bikram practice. I have also seen many people stop practicing, start another form of yoga, and then come back to the Bikram practice because they realised that they aren’t getting the same benefits from said other thing. I have also met many teachers of other styles of yoga who come to the Bikram practice to heal various things they have going on in the body…

So, this leads me (and of course, through my own experience) to believe that this practice works! But, it has to be hard and you have to work hard in order to change. If something is going to change, then something has to change…you can’t expect to get any change without the hard work. Loosy goosy feeds loosy goosy.

Abbey said today in class, “it’s not what the YOGA did, it’s what YOU did”…through your practice you will find all of the answers you are looking for…just have to work hard, try the right way, and never give up. Just sometimes might be harder than you thought, or take more time (see previous post!).


you can’t rush the Universe…is that new?

Hello my yogis. Sorry I’ve been away so long, but I don’t like to write unless I’m inspired and feel like I have something good to say…otherwise I become one of those annoying bloggers with nothing to say.

So, yesterday I was driving to meet a friend for tea and it suddenly donned on me…we really ARE capable of creating whatever we want in our lives, but sometimes is takes longer than we want or imagine. IS THAT NEW INFORMATION? Why have I not realised this before? The realisation started while I was cleaning out some things from my closet and came across a few old collages that I’ve made over the years. (As a side story, I like to make collages and hang them on my walls and stare at them. It started as a form of New Year’s resolution type activity about 10 years ago, and then turned into an anytime I need inspiration and forward movement activity…honestly, having the things that I’m creating in my life in picture and words right in front of me helps in the manifestation. VISUALIZATION=MANIFESTATION). So, there I was, reminiscing about the things that I’ve wanted and/or created in my life over the past few years and thinking about the things that I would include in my next collage and what I would leave off of the collage. It didn’t don on me until I was in the car that even though I may have had to keep putting some things on year after year, that eventually I either don’t desire said thing anymore or I actually create it and get to move on!

I wonder why I forgot that stuff doesn’t always look as we think it’s going to look or come when we think it’s going to come. I am a firm believer that the Universe will always provide exactly what I need when I need it (remember that it might not always be what I WANT, but it’s always what I NEED). And, I am also a firm believer that we can create WHATEVER we want (and, I will be honest, I have thought that for a long time, but secretly knew that there had to be some kind of “cap”…I mean how could we REALLY create ANYTHING…right? WRONG. We really CAN create it all!), but this is the kicker…IT SOMETIMES TAKES LONGER THAN WE THINK IT WILL. Duh.
